Who You Choose to Officiate Matters

If you question weather it matters who you choose as an officiant, consider my mom in 1966 at age 19 unexpectedly hearing the word ‘OBEY’ in only her vows. The shock caused her to freeze and there was an awkward silence that followed. Fortunately, she told me that story and have never subscribed to ‘obey culture.’ And, that’s good for you to know because we wouldn’t be a good fit if you are the type to obey. Also, I’m a secular officiant, and though we can add elements to your ceremony that reflect your beliefs and values, it would be disingenuous for me to perform a deeply religious ceremony.

Having a friend or relative as an officiant can make your ceremony particularly special. Be sure to choose someone well spoken, not inclined to perform a comedy act that your guests don’t understand, and someone who will include what and how YOU want the ceremony to be. A great deal of research is needed to prepare, rehearse, and conduct a cohesive ceremony.

The big thing is to think about is your personal vision for your wedding ceremony. Serious? Fun? Lighthearted? Off the rails? You get to decide! Interview officiants and ask friends. You’ll know when you find the right fit.
